The fort was built by the royal family Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan (the father of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan) in circa 1910.
Sun-dried mud brick and clay were the main construction material used back then. Palm tree trunks cut lengthwise were used to make the roof. Gutters were also made of similar trunks. One of the towers was used as a jail. The fort is also provided with a well but it is dry now.
